Macedonia on Samaras-Merkel meeting agenda

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is set to meet next week with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

Greek media are referring to the possible topics of discussion between the two PMs, MIA reports from Athens.

Daily “Eleftherotypia” reads the September 23 working lunch would focus on the economic situation in Greece, but also issues regarding European and foreign policy.

“The second theme, foreign policy raises certain questions, taking into account Berlin’s recent pressure with regards to Skopje’s NATO and EU integration without prior settlement of the name issue. Athens says the meeting will not touch upon this issue, but talks will certainly tackle the Ukraine crisis”, the paper reads.

Sources in Athens say the two leaders would discuss the Greek economy’s prospects and the Greek program’s progress. In Berlin the rendezvous was described as a “routine meeting.”

Samaras is also expected to brief Merkel on the challenge the coalition is facing over next year’s election of a successor to President Karolos Papoulias. If New Democracy and PASOK fail to find the 180 MPs they need, Greece will have to hold general elections.
