Macedonia will get four new electric locomotives produced by the company CRRC Zhuzhou. A contract was signed Tuesday in Skopje by officials of Macedonian Railways and the Chinese company.
This is the second project that is implemented by the Macedonian government and CRRC Zhuzhou following the first one under which six passenger trainsets were procured. The EUR 8-million investment has been provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to be realized as part of a project on the renewal of the rolling stock in Macedonia.
“By procuring four new electric locomotives, in fact, we are renewing the rolling stock for the first time in 40 years and implementing European and global standards, increasing railroad safety, making sure more passengers use trains, boosting velocity, enabling energy efficiency and protecting the environment and providing better services,” Nikola Kostov, CEO of Macedonian Railways, stated after signing the contract.
According to him, the procurement of new locomotives will also motivate the staff at Macedonian Railways to maintain and enhance their professionalism.
“This a proud day for everybody working at Macedonian Railways. It is also a day of pride for the whole of Macedonia,” Kostov noted.
Thanking for the company being entrusted with the procurement, CRRC CEO Zhou Qinghe called Macedonia ‘a key Southeastern railway transport zone’ and said the country was constantly in the company’s focus.
“Our company will provide resources and expertise. You will get safe and secure products with top performances and a wonderful design,” stated Zhou Qinghe adding the new six electric trains were ‘merely a prelude to a growing friendship.’
Zhuzhou, he said, will provide favorable services in terms of financing so as to support Macedonian completely in its bit to bolster its public transport.
Founded in 1936, CRRC Zhuzhou boasts with eight-decade experience in production and servicing of locomotives. The company produces ultramodern urban passenger trains. It cooperates with more than 10 countries and it realizes procurements estimated at nearly 45 billion yuans annually.
