European Union’s chief diplomat Federica Mogherini is expected to arrive to Macedonia on Thursday evening, for meetings with President Gjorge Ivanov and political leaders.
Mogherini is coming in a moment of high political tensions, a day after President Ivanov refused to give SDSM leader Zoran Zaev a mandate to form the next Government, asking him to first renounce the platform on ethnic Albanian issues that was adopted under the sponsorship of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Johannes Hahn, who is responsible for enlargement in the European Commission, issued a press release calling on Ivanov to give the mandate to Zaev. “We have repeatedly stated that all leaders of the country, including the President, must respect the outcome of the recent elections. In a democracy, one must acknowledge parliamentary majorities, even if one doesn’t like them. I therefore expect all political leaders and institutions to let the democratic process run its course – in the interest of the country’s citizens”, Hahn said, though his press release.
