Eurowings to launch Skopje-Munich route as of October

The low-cost carrier Eurowings, member of Lufthansa group, will inaugurate a new route linking Skopje and Munich as of Oct. 31, thus establishing a connection between Skopje’s Alexander the Great Airport and the Munich International Airport, TAV Macedonia says Thursday in a press release.

According to airline officials, the starting lowest rate of air tickets stands at 39.99 euros. From Franz Josef Straus Airport in Munich, passengers from Macedonia will have the chance to travel to as many destinations as possible since the airport is considered a central hub in the German city. Eurowings recently announced 10 new transatlantic services from its Munich hub.

Eurowings will operate the Skopje-Munich flight twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, with its Airbus A320-200, 174-seated aircraft.

According to  Alper Ersoy, TAV Macedonia General Manager, this is the the start of regular operations by Eurowings, being the latest low-cost airline that has entered the Macedonian aviation market.

“Skopje’s Alexander the Great airport will have a connection with the main airport in Munich, which will be a great choice and opportunity for deepening communications between the two cities. Another important fact is that Eurowings is a member of the Lufthansa group, and our passengers, not just from Macedonia, but also from the region, will have additional connections both in Europe and on an intercontinental level beyond Munich,” Ersoy has stated.

“We are very happy that Skopje joins our global network of 150 destinations. We believe this route will provide fantastic new opportunities for strengthening the bond between Macedonia and Germany and it will enable passengers in the two countries to experience the great cities of Skopje and Munich,” Ivan Orec, Eurowings’ Network development manager, has stated.

The Cologne-based low-cost airline Eurowings is a member of the Lufthansa group. It flies to more than 150 destinations in over 40 countries in Europe, including most of the countries in the region: Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Turkey.

Eurowings is considered the fastest growing airline in 2017 and it is estimated that more than 22 million passengers will fly with Eurowings this year.

TAV Macedonia, it adds, recently added six new routes to its ever-expanding network of destinations from the country’s airports in Skopje and Ohrid.

“Through Alexander the Great, passengers are now directly connected with Rome, Malta and Vaxjo (Sweden) with Wizzair, while Qatar Airways’ established its direct flight to Doha. The summer season in Macedonia’s top tourist destination, Ohrid, was marked by new direct route to Katowice in Poland,” it says

TAV Macedonia completed the first seven months of 2017 with an 8% increase in the number of passengers, reaching 1.089.906 passengers handled at the two Macedonian airports in Skopje and Ohrid. In July, the airports recorded a rise in passenger numbers to a total of 229.776, which is a 15% increase compared to the same month in 2016.
