Former interior minister and head of the Public Security Bureau, Mitko Chavkov, who is in detention under a court order in connection to the events of 27 April 2017 in Macedonia’s Parliament, has gone on hunger strike at the Skopje prison.

On a request of the Public Prosecutors Office, the court ordered a 30-day detention for Chavkov and dozens more for ‘terrorist endangerment of the constitutional order and security’ in regard with the events in the Parliament.

During the Parliament incident in April, Chavkov was at the helm of the Interior Ministry operational HQ. The Ministry of Interior’s lower structures said that he had failed to issue an order for police action for two hours since the onset of violence, thus putting the  life of lawmakers and journalists at risk.
