First-ever hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to be performed in Macedonia

A transplant unit, which has been fully renovated, was opened Thursday at the Hematology Clinic in Skopje, where unrelated donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantations will be performed for the first time ever in Macedonia and abroad.

It is considered one of the most sophisticated medical procedures and patients from Macedonia will no longer have to seek treatment abroad.

Visiting the clinic, Minister of Health Venko Filipce said that as of today, hematology patients in a need of a bone marrow transplant would be treated in rooms and premises refurbished according to modern international standards.

A considerable number of patients with such diagnosis last year were sent abroad for treatment. But by reconstructing this unit, we have created conditions patients to undergo the medical procedure at home, according to him.

“In 2017, about EUR 150,000-200,000 per patient were spent for treatments abroad. We plan on making some serious savings of taxpayers money, close to 75% of the money paid for treatments abroad will be invested in our health system,” Minister Filipce told reporters.
