Fool for Love to premiere at Dramski tonight

American playwright Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love, directed by Dean Damjanovski, will premiere at the Dramski Theater on Friday evening at 8 pm. Another performance will follow at 10 pm.

Jana Stojanovska plays the lead in the first performance and Blagica Dimitrovska in the second. The rest of the cast includes Filip Trajkovikj, Anastas Tanovski, and Kristijan Svetiev.

Miodrag Nećak wrote the music score, Gjorgji Gjorgjievski designed the set, and Elena Vangelovska designed the costumes. The play’s pyrotechnics operator is Metodija Najdoski.

According to Damjanovski, Fool for Love is only an hour and fifteen minutes long, and tells the tale of a tumultuous love relationship between two people who have wasted their lives.

Shepard’s story focuses on May, who meets her old flame Eddie in a run-down Mojave Desert motel. Two other characters appear throughout the play: the Old Man, who offers commentary about the former lovers, and Martin, who is supposed to go out on a date with May.

Reviewed as a “masterpiece of understatement and allusion,” the play was a finalist for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Sam Shepard (1943-2017), described by New York magazine as the greatest American playwright of his generation, wrote short stories, essays, memoirs, and forty-four plays blending imagery of the American West, science fiction, and other elements of popular culture.

He won ten Obie Awards–which cover Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions–for writing and directing, the most given to any writer or director.
