Former UBK chief Saso Mijalkov detained

Saso Mijalkov, former head of the UBK security service, was detained this evening following a request by the Special Public Prosecutor’s office.

Mijalkov was transported to a detention facility near Skopje, where, according to the court order, he will remain for a month. A close relative of Nikola Gruevski, and son of Jordan Mijalkov, Macedonia’s first Interior Minister following independence, who died under mysterious circumstances, Saso Mijalkov led the UBK for most of Gruevski’s term in office. He is charged in four cases initiated by the Special Prosecutor’s office (SPO) – mostly over allegations of illegal wiretapping. Until recently the SPO said it is not requesting Mijalkov’s detention.
