Gruevski: Detention of MPs – an annihilation of democracy, a regime

VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski called Wednesday the order for detention of six MPs from his party ‘a grave precedent, a regime and annihilation of democracy.’

“I take the opportunity once again to call on both the public prosecution and the judiciary, especially the government because it controls everything, to stop doing such things. At the moment, five per cent of all legislators have been put in detention, house arrest or an effective one, i.e. 12 per cent of the parliamentary groups of the VMRO-DPMNE-led coalition,” Gruevski told reporters while exiting the courthouse in Skopje after the postponement of a trial in which he has been involved.

It can happen only in a country where democracy has been buried deeply, according to him.

Gruevski said the detention of MPs was ‘illegal’ and an attempt to oppress the opposition and democracy.

When asked about the upcoming extraordinary congress of VMRO-DPMNE, he said the public would be informed on time in a transparent manner.
