MEP Petir calls on SEC not to subvert the will of the people

European Parliament member from Croatia Marijana Petir, who is head of the Parliament group of friendship with Macedonia, said that it would be unacceptable for the State Electoral Commission to change the will of the people expressed in democratic elections. Petir was referring to the demands by SDSM and BESA, the two parties who lost the race in the ethnic Macedonian and Albanian camps, to force a revote.

“The opposition got everything it wanted, and now it should respect the fact that VMRO-DPMNE won the elections. Their pressure on the SEC is extremely worrying and unacceptable. We had a two years long political crisis because the opposition refused to accept their role in a democratic society. After the long awaited elections happened, now we see the same thing – refusal to accept the outcome. I’m worried and I call on all relevant actors to respect the results of the election and the role that the Macedonian people gave them”, said Petir.

Petir, who sits with the majority EPP group in the Parliament, said that SDSM’s boycott of Parliament so far has cost Macedonia dearly, and has hindered its path toward European integration. “Macedonia needs a strong and stable Government. The Macedonian people, and especially the young, deserve a Government that will continue with reforms and will bring them in the EU”, Petir told the Macedonian Information Agency correspondent in Brussels.
