Ministry of Culture will open a competition for financing translations of works from Macedonia in foreign languages

Competition for financing translations of high-quality literary works from Macedonia in foreign languages, will be opened for the first time in January next year by the Ministry of Culture. This competition is part of the National Strategy for Development of Culture 2013-2017 and will be opened during the whole year.

Macedonian Ministry of Culture will finance translations of artistic prose, drama, poetry, essays, literature for children, anthologies and other literary works targeting the wider public.

The competition covers the literary works, published in Macedonia, in Macedonian and the languages of the ethnic minorities in the country. Only foreign publishers are entitled to submit their applications for the competition, which is o be announced on the Ministry’s web-site. The Ministry will also invite the most prominent publishing houses from Europe, via the diplomatic-representative offices in Macedonia.

“Our surveys show that a rather small number of foreign publishers translate literary works of authors from Macedonia. It is not the case because our literature fails to attract attention, but due to the economic support, European publishers get for this practice. Hence we have agreed to embrace the practice and provided a substantial budget funds for supporting the realization of this project”, said today Culture Minister Kanceska-Milevska on a press conference.
