European Union High Representative for foreign and security policy Federica Mogherini presented the global strategy prepared by her office, which stipulates that continued enlargement of the European Union will be a strategic investment in Europe. The move comes after the United Kingdom voted to leave the Union, which raised questions about the sustainability of the enlargement process, which has been largely slowed down as it is.

The strategy calls for a credible enlargement policy that would constitute an investment in Europe’s security and progress, and has proven to be able to bring peace to formerly war torn areas. This document cites joint challenges before the Balkans and Turkey, which are the main future enlargement regions, such as the need to fight terrorism and organized crime, migration, energy security. “These are issues that can only be resolved through joint work”, Mogherini said.

Regarding the enlargement itself, the High Representative said that it would remain to be based on clear and strict but fair conditions for membership.
