Parliament adopts Electoral Code changes, BESA to have SEC member

The Parliament adopted Monday the changes to the Electoral Code according to which the composition of the State Election Commission (SEC) reflects the representation of parties in the Parliament.

Ruling and opposition MP groups filed a motion for changes in the Electoral Code by which a SEC member could be dismissed prior to the expiration of his/her mandate, thus enabling BESA to have a SEC member.

Earlier in the day, BESA Movement said it expected to have a member in SEC for the coming local elections. Otherwise, SEC’s decisions would be illegitimate, said MP Fadil Zendeli.

The current SEC is composed of three experts, including the president and two vice-presidents, two members each nominated by SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE, as well as one member each nominated by DUI and DPA. According to the current composition of Parliament, BESA is the fourth-largest party represented there.

According to party sources, BESA board member Ermira Asani Salija is seen as the leading candidate for the SEC post.
