SEC members to return or donate four salaries

Members of the State Election Commission (SEC) decided Tuesday to return or donate four salaries  they awarded themselves as a bonus for the recent local elections.

The bonus for SEC members, administration service and other persons engaged in the election process is awarded in line with the Article 19 of the Electoral Code and SEC’s Rules of Procedure, SEC said at today’s discussion on the matter. They also notified long working hours, namely full engagement during holidays and weekends.

The decision on awarding a bonus is justified, considering the fact that under certain circumstances even our lives have been under threat, they said. However, they accepted the remark on poor transparency.

Yesterday, Giving a lecture on combating corruption at the Skopje Faculty For Security Studies, US Ambassador to Macedonia Jess Baily notified that SEC members voted unanimously to award themselves with extra salary for four more months over their engagement in local elections this October. Earlier, he added, they also got additional five-month salaries for the 2016 general elections.

I am a public servant, he said, and hence support awarding of public servants working overtime, but I have a question about this matter. SEC is an independent body. Maybe this move was legal, but the voting took place behind closed doors, Baily said.
