Rector’s Board of Skopje-based University “Ss.Cyril and Methodius” has urged the Ministry of Education and Science to withdraw from parliamentary procedure the draft-changes to higher education laws. The university remains open and prepared for cooperation in contributing to reforms in higher education in compliance with European and global standards, read the conclusions of Friday’s emergency session.

The Rector’s Board says the text of the laws placed for public insight and debate at website ENER differs from the text in the materials for the Parliament session.

“The new provisions represent an essential change of the text, thus imposing the need for postponement of the draftlaws’ adoption towards enabling broader public and expert debate, in order for the state and the universities to jointly discuss and decide over changes in the field of higher education and ensuring quality in this significant sector”, read the conclusions, which will be forwarded to Minister of Education and Science Abdilaqim Ademi.

The Board concludes that the timeframe from putting such significant changes for public insight to the start of the parliamentary procedure is too short for involvement of all parties concerned in developing a qualitative text.

Students are set to stage a protest against the law changes in front of the Government building on Friday.
