Stevo Pendarovski has been appointed national coordinator for preparing Macedonia to join NATO, Government spokesman Mile Bosnjakovski informed on Wednesday.

The decision to appoint SDSM MP and former presidential candidate Pendarovski as national coordinator for NATO was adopted at Tuesday’s government session.

Pendarovski will assume office after the decision is published in the Official Gazette. Until then, he remains an MP in the Parliament, where he is also a deputy member of the Parliamentary Committee for Supervising the Work of the Security and Counter-Intelligence Directorate and the Intelligence Agency.

Macedonia had a national coordinator for NATO from 2006 to 2009, with incumbent Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Dimitrov, holding the position. The position stayed vacant after Macedonia failed to receive a membership invitation at the Bucharest summit in 2008.
