VMRO-DPMNE didn’t attend ZELS constitutive session, Silegov elected chairman

Skopje Mayor Petre Silegov was elected Wednesday board chairman of the Association of Local Self-Government Units (ZELS), while Cair and Kavadarci mayors, Visar Ganiu and Mitko Jancev respectively, have been appointed deputy-chairs.

Mayors from the opposition VMRO-DPMNE did not attend the ZELS constitutive session, citing undemocratic activities and selective justice by the ruling authorities for their absence.

Silegov said after the session he would focus on continuation of the decentralization process and improvement of the municipal financing towards greater independence.

“This means increase of the current percentage of funds transferred from the VAT and the personal income tax collection, as well as regulation of the section of subsidies allocated by the central authorities. This will enable greater financial independence of municipalities and improved services to citizens”, stressed Silegov.

He added that his activities would also include national and international lobbying towards improving ZELS’ operations.
