Former VMRO-DPMNE leader Nikola Gruevski has kept his MP mandate after only 58 deputies voted in favor of the court’s motion.

The Parliament’s Committee on Rules of Procedures and Mandatory-Immunity Issues endorsed by majority of votes the court’s motion for termination of the MP mandate of Nikola Gruevski for the purpose of serving a two-year prison sentence over Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) case dubbed Tank.

Today’s decision over Gruevski’s mandate does not delay the execution of the sentence.

The motion refers to Article 59 of the Parliament’s Rules of Procedures, which states that the court delivering the judgment should inform the Parliament Speaker over an MP convicted of a crime or other punishable act that makes him/her unworthy of performing the MP office.

Former prime minister and leader of VMRO-DPMNE was due to report to the prison by Thursday. But he and his lawyers filed appeals against the judge’s decision to execute sanctions that handled the case. The court informs that as of today, the Criminal Council has three-day deadline to decide on the appeals.
