VMRO-DPMNE President Hristijan Mickoski called on state prosecutors to investigate alleged corruption in the REK Bitola coal mine and power plant. Reports of involvement of companies close to the ruling SDSM party in the publicly ran energy complex that provides much of Macedonia’s electricity have mushroomed after SDSM grabbed power in 2017.

I encourage the prosecutors to investigate if it is true that a top police official appointed by SDSM was altering a criminal report related to companies and individuals engaged in coal digging in REK Bitola. Did this happen and if it did, what was the reason? I ask because relatives of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev are being mentioned here, Mickoski said during his TV21 interview.

Before the July 15 elections an audio leak tape showed SDSM party activists discussing the torching of the car of a VMRO-DPMNE activist in Bitola, after he was revealing details about the involvement of the Zaev family in the large coal mining operations in the city.
