Environmental inspectors have ordered the temporary closure of a division of the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Skopje after it was revealed that it released acids that killed off fish in the Vardar river.
The ruptured pipe caused a mixture of acids and iron to spill and flow into the Vardar without being properly treated. The reddish yellow sludge painted a portion of the river and caused a mass fish die-off.
ArcelorMittal will have to seize operations at the division for three months and stands to be fined by between 70 and 100 thousand EUR.
