Burim Rustemi from the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPO) is being interrogated today by the OJO state prosecutors for his role in the growing allegations about corruption and abuse of office by the SPO.
Rustemi was supposed to be questioned on Thursday, but had a previously scheduled court appearance. The elite Special Prosecutor’s Office is in a state of disarray, as its chief prosecutor Katica Janeva is suspected of using the office to blackmail businessmen and extort millions from them. Rustemi was the lead prosecutor in one of Janeva’s cases which involved going after a number of mid sized companies.
Janeva herself is expected to be interrogated on Tuesday. A flood of leaks revealed that Janeva and many of her prosecutors have turned on each other, with lobbing accusations and threats. The SPO office was used to drag down the VMRO-DPMNE party with dozens of politically motivated allegations, and helped propel Zoran Zaev and his SDSM party to power.
