Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov advised Zaev not to resign, insisting that the failure at the European Council is not final.

Nothing is over with “North” Macedonia and Albania, it’s only being postponed. It’s a fact that we didn’t agree to have a written decision on enlargement in the Council. They have our support from the start and everything that was started can be completed in six to seven months. I had a long conversation with Zoran Zaev, and I advised him not to resign. He did much and has a lot more to do, Borisov said, comparing the situation to the presidency of Boris Tadic in Serbia, when European countries insisted that as much changes are made while Tadic, or Zaev, is in office.

Bulgaria is pushing that Macedonia accepts its Framework positions, which include accepting the Bulgarian character of a number of historic figures and period, changes to history books, and end to references of Bulgaria siding with the Axis in World War Two.

If there are parties, forces in “North” Macedonia, Albania, that could turn the clock back, it’s a big risk, Borisov added.

Zaev resorted to threats aimed at European politicians that, if he is not rewarded for imposing the name change of Macedonia, conservatives will return to power.
