The ELEM energy company announced that it was able to turn on one of the three generators at the REK Bitola coal plant yesterday. This will provide some much needed domestic production, as Macedonia is reduced to import most of its electricity at a very high price.

The plant – Macedonia’s biggest – suffers from chronic corruption and mismanagement, which depleted its coal reserves and led to frequent defects. Another of the generators could be available, but its relay station burnt down ten days ago.
