Ohrid, Macedonia’s main tourist resort, enjoys a reputation of clean environment with the surrounding mountains and the large lake ensuring clean air. But the local air pollution measuring stations show that even Ohrid is not immune from the horrific levels of pollution over winter.

PM10 particle levels in Ohrid yesterday afternoon, as the citizens began firing up their coal and wood furnaces, rose at times above 230 micrograms per cubic meter. Most of the day the levels were above 100. These levels are between twice and five times above maximum allowed concentrations.
