The Zaev Government issued a statement calling on the public not to consider the coming educational reform – “the abolition of history”. The Government, pressed by Greece and Bulgaria to rewrite Macedonian history, announced a plan that would roll several elementary school classes into one, and history will be part of a new class that will include geography and civics.

A broad public debate with active participation of the Education Ministry and the Bureau for Development of Education will be held, in a fully transparent process including al stakeholders, to reach the best possible solutions and a high level of agreement on the announced concept of elementary education, the Government said in its press release, predicting the outcome of the debate that is yet to happen.

The Government added that history will not be abolished as a class, but will become part of the new curriculum, without reductions in the number of teachers of history, geography or civics.
