Igor Spasov, the police officer sentenced to 14 years in prison for the brutal 2011 beating and murder of Martin Neskovski (20) at the main Skopje square, has failed to return to prison on Friday when his latest sick leave was up.

We have notified the court that Igor Spasov has not returned. Up until now we would regularly receive reports from the court when they would extend his sick leave. This time, it expired on Friday, said Idrizovo prison warden Bobi Mojsovski.

Spasov had secured a series of sick leaves which allowed him to avoid showing up in prison for over a year.

The murder he perpetrated was a key element in galvanizing street protests in favor of the then opposition SDSM party, both in 2011 and later in 2015, when Zoran Zaev manipulated with excerpts of illegally recorded conversations to create the perception that the VMRO-DPMNE led Government was trying to cover up the murder.

Zaev used the tapes to spark massive, violent protests in 2015, which contributed to his power-grab two years later. A complete, unedited tape was revealed only recently, and it showed the extent to which Zaev manipulated the recording. He cordially met with Spasov during one of his visits to the Idrizovo prison, and his subsequent extended leave prompted allegations that the SDSM led Government is looking kindly at him.
