VMRO-DPMNE is back, says Vlado Misajlovski, deputy leader of the main opposition party.

VMRO is not just a political party. It is in the genes of all nearly Macedonians, Misajlovski adds after the party fought Stevo Pendarovski, candidate of SDSM, DUI and a host of smaller parties to a draw in the first round of the presidential elections.

SDSM and DUI lost a huge share of their vote – about 200.000 votes less than they had in 2017 municipal elections. VMRO did not advance much beyond the 2017 score, but given the outright persecution the party has been through since then, and the numerous attempts to split its leadership, the result greatly emboldened the opposition.

The city of Skopje is disappointed. They didn’t see a single initiative in the past two years, nothing is done to resolve the problems of the citizens. SDSM tried to mock the voters’ intelligence and now it is boomeranging back to them. They give Zaev a broom, call on him to sweep out the unpopular party officials. I tell them, you all get a broom and sweep all of you out of politics. You are the biggest disappointment for the Republic of Macedonia, says the former Transportation Minister, known for his can-do approach to some of the major infrastructure projects initiated under the VMRO-DPMNE led Government, most of which now remain unfinished.
