The Parliament should receive today the report prepared by the Council of public prosecutors, which calls for the dismissal of Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva.

This should serve as the basis for the dismissal of Janeva, who offered her resignation a month and a half ago, when the news first broke about her involvement in a major racketeering scandal. But, Janeva conditioned her resignation with the appointment of a new Special Prosecutor, a move which is blocked as Zaev’s Government and the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party can’t reach agreement on a new law on state prosecutors. Zaev’s SDSM party wants to preserve as much of Janeva’s discredited team as possible, while VMRO demands a clean break after the numerous reports of political and criminal abuse of the institution.

Janeva has been detained for two weeks now, on the charge of extorting money from businessmen she was threatening with criminal charges.
