President Stevo Pendarovski warned that for Macedonia, saying that Goce Delcev is a Bulgarian is a red line which the country “probably won’t be able to cross”. Still, Pendarovski acknowledged that the legendary VMRO leader did write that he was a Bulgarian, adding that he fought for Macedonia.

That is his historic context, that he fought for an independent Macedonian state. Goce even asked, in his will, that his bones are buried in independent Macedonia. We will have political problems if the Bulgarian approach remains the same, Pendarovski said during an interview.

The “ownership” argument over Goce Delcev soured relations between Macedonia and Bulgaria, with the Bulgarian side threatening that it will block the EU and NATO accession of Macedonia unless Macedonian history books reflect the Bulgarian position on Delcev.

In an interview with a Bulgarian led left wing news site in Brussels, Pendarovski was asked about the issue and said that Macedonia has been warned about a possible veto by Bulgaria.

The Bulgarians have started complaining in Brussels about the commission’s work, complaining that there have been no results… Informally, they are saying that if there are no results, ‘we will block’,” Pendarovski told Euractiv.

To this, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov confirmed that Bulgaria may block the opening of EU accession talks.
