Criminal law professor Gordan Kalajdziev believes that outgoing Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva will likely end up as the chief suspect in the major racketeering case that is developing after the arrest of Bojan Jovanovski – Boki 13 on charges of extortion of 1.5 million EUR from a powerful businessman.

Given all the we see and hear in the media, it seems that Katica Janeva looks like the prime defendant. It is unlikely that Boki 13 was able to extort money on his own. The seizure of Janeva’s phone leads in that direction, Kalajdziev told Kanal 5 in an interview.

The opposition is demanding that Janeva is detained as soon as possible, to stop her from destroying evidence or intimidating witnesses.

As for the future of the SPO, Kalajdziev believes that the unit can’t continue with its present work. His advice is to accept Janeva;s resignation and try to appoint someone else in his place. The professor, who was a candidate for Special Prosecutor but lost out to Janeva in 2015, says that the proposed transformation of the SPO into a permanent unit within the general office of state prosecutors will be a long and problematic process, and will likely block any work on the cases currently managed by the SPO.
