Statement from Skopje Mayor Petre Silegov caused outrage today, when he bragged about the fine issued to a driver who sped through the Christmas ornaments in Skopje’s Macedonia Square.

Silegov posted the fine issued to the driver for his reckless stunt which prompted families to flee out of the way of his car. But it became apparent that the driver will be fined a mere 45 EUR – peanuts given that the car he used to cause the incident was a Bentley.

The outrage prompted Interior Minsiter Oliver Spasovski to do some PR damage control, and call for a hike in fines for reckless drivers. But the fines were greatly reduced on his watch, so the ridiculous fine for public endangerment during the Christmas market, which worried many that it could be a terror attack, is issued under a suggestion from Spasovski himself.

Some media outlets are reporting that the drier is a man from the village of Aracinovo, near Skopje, a place notorious for its criminal gangs, and that he has a lengthy record.
