VMRO-DPMNE: The pardoned criminal Zoran Zaev is the biggest obstacle on Macedonia’s road toward EU membership

The opposition VMRO-DPMNE party warned that, with the daily flood of corruption scandals involving the SDSM led Government, it is clear by now that Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who was himself pardoned or suspiciously acquitted for a number of crimes, is becoming the main obstacle on the road to EU accession.

Macedonia’s friends and allies see crimes and theft go unpunished each and every day. The European Union and the United States demand that we tackle the racketeering, the unlawful construction, that we put on trial not only the lowest echelon of criminals but those aiding and abetting them as well. Macedonia is sinking deeper into corruption and all the Zoran Zaev can offer is the persecution of his political opponents. The institutions of the state are abused to cover up the crimes of the Government all the while political opponents are tried in politically driven cases, VMRO-DPMNE said in a press release published as video and audio evidence came out regarding the racketeering scandal involving Boki 13 and Katica Janeva.

Macedonia is hoping to be allowed to open EU accession talks in October, and having a solid track record in fighting high level corruption is seen as a main pre-condition. Chances have declined significantly after it was credibly alleged that the chief prosecutor charged with going after high level corruption was herself the source of corruption, abuse of office and extortion.
