Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic asked whether the guarantees the EU would give Serbia if it agrees to a deal with Kosovo would be the same as those given to Macedonia.

We can’t have one side win it all. They would gain our territory, our people and our recognition. What would we get? A possible EU membership in ten years? Who would guarantee that? Is it the same type of a guarantee which “North” Macedonia got, that it would be allowed to open EU accession talks?, Vucic said in an interview with the Austrian Standard.

Vucic said that he agrees that French President Macron is working for the benefit of France and Europe when he made his move to block the EU accession talks of Macedonia and Albania, but that it also means Serbia should look after its own interests and maintain good ties with Russia, China and Turkey. Serbia is under international pressure to recognize the independence of Kosovo, and the prospect of EU membership is being dangled in front of it, but the recent fiasco in Brussels undermined the case of those proposing such a swap.
