After Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov raised the prospect of blocking Macedonia’s EU accession in the latest historic feud, Zoran Zaev replied that both countries need to mature together.

We signed a treaty of friendship with Bulgaria and not one of problems and recriminations. We agreed that shared moments from the past should bring us closer together, not separate us. The experiences with historic committees across the world and Europe show that they take time, patience, effort, respect toward one another and great mutual dedication. Above all we need a shared desire to move forward. In order to succeed, we need to mature together. Our friendship needs to be mutual, Zaev said.

Speaking at the beginning of the European Council on Thursday, Borisov said that, after Macedonian historians failed to accept that legendary VMRO leader Goce Delcev was a Bulgarian, Macedonia may have to wait and “mature” before moving forward. The statement was seen as clear threat of blocking Macedonia’s EU accession, as provided in the treaty Zaev and Borisov signed in 2017.
