Zaev was asked about the repeated arrests of former minister Mile Janakieski, who is the main target of his regime and is currently under hunger strike. Zaev said that he is “not unsympathetic” to his case, but that he can’t intervene in the judiciary.

I worked with Janakieski great when I was Mayhor, but I won’t intervene on his behalf, because that would mean exerting pressure and influence over the judiciary, Zaev said.

Janakieski was attacked by Albanian terrorists in the Sutka prison in February, after which he was allowed to go into house arrest, but was re-arrested last week on another of the half dozen politically driven charges against him. He has entered into a 10 days long hunger strike and his wife warned that his health is deteriorating.
