A citizen of Strumica sent a video to the Lider news site revealing how the Elenica factory, owned by the Zaev family, is belching smoke during the evening hours, when the city is at its most polluted.

Despite Zoran Zaev’s boasts that he cleaned the air in Strumica by introducing natural gas heating in parts of the city, but never the less, Strumica remains one of the worst polluted cities in Macedonia. The PM10 particle concentration this morning were 175 micrograms per cubic meter, which is three to four times above the maximum allowed limits. And this concentration was measured in the part of the city where the Zaev family operates its Elenica factory for construction materials.

The video reveals the city blanketed in smoke while Elenica’s chimney is working full blast. The evenings are the most polluted part of the city, as this is when households fire up their own heating furnaces that often use wood or coal, and adding industrial pollution to the mix makes the air in many Macedonian cities unsafe to breathe.

Elenica is owned by Trajce Zaev, Zoran Zaev’s cousing. And while the outgoing Prime Minister is declaring a modest wealth for his inner family, Trajce, his brother Vice Zaev and other family members have seen their businesses grow exponentially after Zaev became Prime Minister.
