The European Commission presented Monday its regular report on the situation with air pollution in Europe, which includes the six countries from the Western Balkans, in which it is assessed that the situation is still unsatisfactory, MIA’s correspondent in Brussels reported.

The health of the people of Macedonia and other countries in the region is still seriously endangered, show the latest figures of the report of the European Environment Agency for 2018, which results in a high rate of premature death, primarily due to the high concentration of PM2.5 particles in the air, the report said.

If the highest rates in absolute numbers are in Germany, Italy, Poland and France due to the large population, in relative numbers, the effect is most negative in the Balkans.

In terms of deaths in relative terms, the impact of air pollution is most strongly felt in Central and Eastern Europe where the highest concentrations of PM2.5 particles were measured, ie Kosovo, Serbia, Albania, Bulgaria and Macedonia, the report stresses.

European Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevičius said that the European Commission stands ready to help the countries in the region, especially through the Green Agreement for the Western Balkans.
