Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party won 55 percent of the vote in the European elections held in Hungary. This guarantees 14 seats in the European Parliament for Fidesz, out of the 21 in total for Hungary. Turnout in Hungary grew by 11 percent to 30.5 percent, which further confirms Orban’s domination over the political scene of the country.

This gives Fidesz additional clout in the European People’s Party which is projected to win the elections, but with a significant reduction in its number of seats in the European Parliament. A number of more centrist EPP parties tried to remove Fidesz from the party, prompting him to seek closer ties with other right wing parties in Europe and to insist that the EU should be led by an EPP led coalition with other right wing movements, not a centrist coalition with the socialists or the Greens.
