April 3, 2022 will go down in Hungarian political history as the most significant event of Hungarian democracy in the era following the transition away from communism. For the fourth parliamentary election in a row since 2010, Fidesz won, and Viktor Orbán will once again form the government. Sunday’s parliamentary election and the child protection referendum, held at the same time, and expected to clear the validity threshold, proved that Hungarian democracy is alive and well.

Once again, it has become clear that the legal framework is stable and provides sufficient guarantees to safeguard the integrity of the elections, both against external interference and internal abuses. This is confirmed by the turnout figures: about 70 percent of eligible voters participated and cast valid votes. Although the official results of the vote remain to be announced, it is already clear that Fidesz-KDNP has achieved a political feat of historic magnitude: never before in the history of free and fair parliamentary elections in Hungary has a coalition won the confidence of a majority of voters in four consecutive parliamentary elections.
