Time Out magazine named lake Ohrid the most beautiful place in Europe, describing it as a much more affordable and peaceful alternative to Italy’s popular Lake Como.
While Lake Como draws A-listers and crowds in equal measure, Lake Ohrid – one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes – offers a quieter, more affordable alternative without skimping on scenery. Think glassy blue water, mountain backdrops and a shoreline dotted with historic towns that feel frozen in time, the magazine writes.
According to Time Out, Europe is home to a number of impressive but less-visited lake destinations, and lake Ohrid was at the top of their list.
The old town of Ohrid is known for its narrow cobblestone streets and large number of medieval churches. According to legend, there were once as many as 365 of them, one for each day of the year. The city’s distinctive appearance is complemented by the terracotta roofs that slope down to the lake. During the day, visitors can enjoy swimming and visiting ancient sites, while evenings are ideal for watching the sun set behind the surrounding mountains, Time Out writes.
All of this, Time Out notes, can be experienced at significantly more affordable prices compared to a vacation on Lake Como.
