“I expect that everything we have achieved in terms of delivery regarding the Reform Agenda will be recognized very soon, and that we will be given the chance to finally begin the negotiation process,” stated Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski from the Berlin Process Summit, which is taking place today in Sveti Stefan, Montenegro.
“It is a fact that our foreign and security policy is already aligned with that of the European Union, that we are well ahead in our delivery regarding the Reform Agenda, and that we are fulfilling everything required of us—consistent with the principle that progress should be evaluated based on actual delivery,” Mickoski said in a statement to the Macedonian Television. The Prime Minister expressed his expectation that these efforts would soon be recognized, providing an opportunity to finally launch the negotiation process.
“I also emphasized that gradual integration represents an opportunity for all of us; however, it must under no circumstances serve as a substitute for full membership in the European Union,” Mickoski underscored.
Earlier, Mickoski participated in a working lunch dedicated to the future of the Berlin Process and the role of young people in shaping the future of the Western Balkans. “Today, I attended a working lunch dedicated to the future of the Berlin Process and the role of young people in shaping the future of the Western Balkans. Regional cooperation, the exchange of ideas, and the creation of new opportunities are important steps toward a stable, prosperous region and accelerated European integration,” Prime Minister Mickoski stated in a post on his Facebook profile.
Mickoski is leading the Macedonian delegation at the Summit taking place in Sveti Stefan, Montenegro, where discussions focused on the economic connectivity of the region, security, and the acceleration of integration into the European Union. He had previously stated that he expected strong messages regarding the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union, as well as substantive discussions and concrete results from today’s Berlin Process Summit in Montenegro.
The Summit marks the conclusion of Montenegro’s chairmanship. In addition to leaders from the Western Balkans, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz—a strong advocate for the region’s progress and integration into the European Union—is also participating.
German Chancellor Merz reaffirmed support for the accession of Western Balkan countries to the European Union, but emphasized that governments in the region must demonstrate political will and implement the necessary reforms. Merz advocated for a faster rapprochement between the region and the Union, pledging his personal support for this process. At the same time, he called for intensified reform efforts by the countries aspiring to membership.
The Berlin Process is an intergovernmental platform launched in 2014 on the initiative of Germany—under then-Chancellor Angela Merkel—with the primary goal of accelerating European integration and deepening regional cooperation among the countries of the Western Balkans.
