The Council of the city of Skopje approved today the budget rebalance, which increases the city’s budget by 61.76 million denars to 5.32 billion, informed the Mayor of Skopje, Orce Gjorgievski. According to Gjorgievski, the additional funds are the result of savings, financial discipline and a reduction in unproductive costs.
More capital investments, greater support for citizens and a historic reduction in liabilities, these are the results of the responsible and efficient management of the City of Skopje, announced Mayor Gjorgievski.
As one of the largest infrastructure projects envisaged in the rebalance, he singles out the construction of a new bridge and street that will connect Gjorche Petrov and Saraj. According to the Mayor, 420 million denars have been allocated for this project in the Development Program. The goal is to create a new entrance to Skopje with new infrastructure. An additional 61 million denars are foreseen for projects related to the upcoming European Capital of Culture events in 2028.
Funds have also been provided for support for oncology patients. Gjorgjievski states that by the beginning of August, 1,265 applications had been received and all of them had been paid. Funds will also be available for every patient who submits an application by the end of the year. No one will be left out! – said the mayor.
The revised budget also foresees funds for Skopje’s high schools and youth. New desks and chairs, IT equipment and equipment for school offices will be purchased, and playgrounds and fitness areas will also be financed. Funds have also been foreseen for a ski weekend for high school students, after, as Gjorgjievski states, the free summer camp was successfully implemented.
An additional 25 million denars are being provided for the reconstruction of smaller streets in Skopje municipalities, and another 10 million denars are planned for the cleaning of landfills. In addition to new investments, Gjorgjievski points out in the announcement that the City of Skopje is also reducing inherited liabilities. According to his data, in just nine months, the total liabilities of the City of Skopje, public enterprises, cultural institutions and secondary schools were reduced by 60.2 million euros. As of August 27, 2026, the current liabilities of the City of Skopje, according to Gjorgjievski, were reduced by 322.1 million denars, while liabilities in the amount of 743 million denars were additionally reduced, based on loans, unpaid expropriations, lost court proceedings with interest and court costs, unpaid subsidies and undertaken program activities. Gjorgievski states that half of the cultural institutions of the City of Skopje have fully cleared their liabilities, while at the rest they were significantly reduced.
The Mayor also points out that the City of Skopje is recording high realization of capital projects. According to him, capital realization in the second quarter amounted to 706.3 million denars. Gjorgjievski compares this amount with the total realization in the first three quarters in the first years of the mandates of his predecessors Petre Silegov and Danela Arsovska, which, according to his announcement, amounted to 330.3 million and 368.4 million denars, respectively.
We are not creating new debts, we are repaying the old ones. We are not cutting capital investments, we are increasing them, said Gjorgjievski.
