Considering global need for data, almost 7 trillion dollars will be invested in the next 6-10 years in the construction of data centers. If we manage to bring 0,01 percent of that to the region, not only to Macedonia, that will be a huge progress and that is why the countries in the region are working on such projects, said the Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski in an interview with MIA.
The Government’s plans are to attract this type of investment and the Prime Minister said that we have several with whom we are in a kind of negotiations, discussions, to see, says Andonovski, which model suits us the most, but also which model global investors are interested in.
We are not the most attractive country in the world for such investments. There are many countries in which investments are being made. There is a race for investors in data centers in the European Union, as almost 7 trillion dollars of investments have been announced in the next 5-6 years in such data centers for the needs of the world for data and, in fact, in that fight you are fighting for more investment because that means more capital in the country, Andonovski said, adding that all countries that want to progress have already been actively working to attract this type of investment in the past period because this is a clean industry.
He reveals that the Ministry is working on several projects, of which the national data center and the optical infrastructure are of particular importance. A feasibility study for its construction has been prepared for the national data center and locations are currently being considered that will be in industrial zones, in industrial facilities, most likely near the capital.
I think they will be near Skopje. We have a good infrastructure setup of the national data center and it is located, which is very important, on a different tectonic plate from Prilep, which means the connection between Skopje and Prilep will be live, and they will be physically separated. And our third project is the construction of infrastructure, government optical, between all these state institutions, that is, the data center, the national, the secondary one in Prilep and the key state institutions, which must have some infrastructure in Skopje – he says.
