The VLEN party declared victory in Skopje’s Cair district – which was the most hotly contested race in the local elections. Deputy Prime Minister Izet Mexhiti confronted former Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani from DUI, and according to VLEN, their candidate Mexhiti won in the first round. In his remarks, Mexhiti called on DUI leader Ali Ahmeti to resign, saying that he will only win in a number of rural municipalities.
DUI and Ahmeti insisted on legitimacy in these elections. I congratulate them on their victory in Plasnica. In all other municipalities VLEN is in a convincing lead. In Cair we can declare victory in the first round. It was their choice that we measure our strength in Cair and Tetovo, and VLEN is the definitive winner, Mexhiti said, adding that he expects VLEN to win the mayoral races in 4-5 additional municipalities in the first round. He added that even Gostivar, where DUI and Arben Taravari’s AA party teamed up, is on the verge on not having the census needed for victory in the first round, meaning that VLEN could contest it in the second round.
