The situation with forest fires has worsened significantly today. This afternoon, we had at least 21 fires in open areas, most of which are currently active, said the director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue (DZS), Stojance Angelov. He singled out the fire on the territory of the municipality of Makedonski Brod in a place called Vidush near the village of Dragov as one of the fires that are most difficult to extinguish.
Tomorrow morning, we are sending a DZS module there consisting of volunteer firefighters who have special training in extinguishing forest fires, said Angelov, adding that the fire has not affected a quality forest, but a rocky area with bushes, thorns and dry grass is burning on terrain that is extremely difficult to move.
As Angelov said, there are also severe fires on the territory of the municipality of Studenicani above the village of Morane, where three firefighting planes are operating. Skopje firefighters are also at the scene with the support of four teams of the national fire service equipped with modified military all-terrain vehicles.
There is also an active fire on the territory of the municipality of Zelenikovo above the village of Strahojadica, where there was a severe fire several years ago. We also have a severe fire in the municipality of Kicevo above the village of Manastirsko Dolnenci, which threatens the local monastery. I believe that the local firefighters will manage to prevent the fire from spreading to the monastery. We will send additional information there tomorrow morning, Angelov pointed out.
