As of today, the water in the city supply in Gostivar is safe to drink, announced at a press conference the director of the DZS directorate Stojanche Angelov. Angelov and the director of the Food and Veterinary Agency Oliver Milanov were in Gostivar today and, to assure the citizens, drank from the tap water.
Milanov said that they have came by satisfactory results after laboratory tests by the Institute of Public Health and the local laboratory in Gostivar with samples taken from seven measuring points on Monday morning and evening, as well as on Tuesday morning.
The Food and Veterinary Agency informs the residents of Gostivar that as of today the water can be used for drinking. The water was microbiologically correct last week, but during the tests carried out, an increased presence of residual chlorine was determined, above the limits provided for by the rulebook on the requirements for the quality of drinking water, said Milanov. He explained that the increased presence of chlorine was a result of increased disinfection of drinking water and therefore additional measures were needed and to wait for the recommendation to drink the water.
The latest results from the laboratory tests confirm that the water is microbiologically and physically – chemically correct, that is, that the tested parameters, including the presence of residual chlorine, are within the limits provided for by the Regulation on the quality of drinking water. This meets the conditions for the water from the water supply system in Gostivar to be used for drinking again, said Milanov.
The city suffered a massive pollution incident almost a month ago, after the local water company inexplicably began pumping untreated water, apparently to improve the water pressure in the pipes. Several top managers of the local utility company were charged over the incident.
