A fourth patient died from West Nile fever, announced the director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic Fadil Cana.
Doctor Cana said that the deceased was 76 years old and had been treated for 27 days at the Clinic, but due to prior serious illnesses and the severe neuroinvasive form of the brain infection caused by the virus, a fatal outcome occurred in the late afternoon. A total of four people have died from the mosquito borne fever in Macedonia, and 15 have been cured and discharged from the Clinic.
All of the deceased were elderly with prior health issues. But, a 25-year-old patient who was considered a clinical suspect, was confirmed with a neuroinvasive form of infection, and another 24-year-old patient was hospitalized and tests are being done to confirm the virus.
