Filipce faces criticism within SDSM over his position on data center development

SDSM leader Venko Filipce is facing criticism after his position against development of data centers even from inside his own party. Most notably, his predecessor as SDSM leader Dimitar Kovacevski, came out with strong criticism of Filipce.

It’s fortunate that Pehcevo is not in the Silicon Valley, or in China, Kovacevski quipped. In a later interview, the former telecom executive said that he visited massive data center sites in the US and China and understands that it’s the technology of the future. Kovacevski reacted after SDSM called on the members of the municipal council in the tiny, depopulated municipality of Pehcevo to vote against the zoning of an area for data center development. Member of Parliament Slavjanka Petrovska, who is also questioning Filipce’s leadership of the party, made similar points to Kovacevski during a TV interview.

It is already clear that for everything that is in the interest of the citizens and for every project that brings development and investments, is opposed by the dredge of SDS led by Venko Filipce. The development of data centers is an opportunity to attract investments, develop a new industry, create new jobs and advance the country, said the VMRO-DPMNE party in a statement, noting the criticism Filipce is facing within the party.

The ruling party, in its statement, debunks some of Filipce’s claims, such as that these investments would use electricity paid by the public or waste water. “Even after these issues were answered, Filipce still talks about the electricity price and the water usage, and leaves the impression that it is not his to offer an solutions, but to be against at any cost”.
