Minister of Internal Affairs Panche Toskovski stated today that Iva Mihajlova had left the country illegally and that an international arrest warrant would be issued for her later today.
Based on the information I have, an international arrest warrant will be issued today; the Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested that she be remanded in custody. If the court issues such a decision, the Ministry will immediately process it through our international cooperation channels. I hope our eastern neighbor will step up and respect international rules, the European Convention on Human Rights, and everything that defines a normal European state—which Bulgaria claims to be and essentially is, as part of the EU family, Toskovski said in an interview with Sitel.
Bulgaria, he added, needs to demonstrate this through actions rather than mere declarations. Iva Mihajlova, who is facing charges in Macedonia in connection with a fatal traffic accident, recently fled to Bulgaria where she was welcomed as a hero.
The Macedonian Ministry of Internal Affairs previously announced that she had exited Macedonia and entered Bulgaria illegally. Checks were conducted via the joint contact center with the Republic of Bulgaria, including by the Bulgarian border police, who reported that there was no record of the individual legally entering Bulgarian territory, the Ministry of Interior announced this afternoon.
