State prosecutors have opened a case to verify reports about the significant pollution with waste in the protected area near the Rasce springs, that supply the capital Skopje.
As the Skopje prosecutor’s office announced, a public prosecutor will coordinate the activities of the State Environmental Inspectorate and the competent inspection services in order to carry out checks regarding the origin of the landfill, as well as the possible consequences.
If elements of a crime against the environment are determined and perpetrators identified, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will act in accordance with its jurisdiction for criminal prosecution, the statement added.
Media reports from the village have recently focused on a landfill that has grown near Rasce. While it’s common in many municipalities across Macedonia to have large barely regulated landfills near the towns and villages, this one could be a pollution risk for the critical water spring.
